Any homework shall be assigned to reinforce and strengthen content currently being studied or content
previously taught. It shall be designed as a focused learning experience with the intended purpose of
meeting a learning goal. Teachers shall consider the following factors when assigning homework:
- The grade level of the student.
- Level and degree of difficulty of the subject being studied.
- The maturity level of the student.
- The instructional needs of the student.
- The purpose of the assignment and its relation to the objectives of the course under study.
- The length of the assignment and the amount of time that will be required to complete it.
- Homework demands being made in other subject areas.
The following are acceptable reasons for assigning homework:
- Increase in procedural fluency, used for improving students’ abilities to apply these skills in more
complex problem solving. - Application of the learning concept from the current day or previous learning in a contextualized
manner. - Deepening understanding of a concept—providing students time to read further, elaborate on a
new idea and expand their understanding. - Preparation for the following day's learning, such as an advance organizer or cue to increase
readiness for new information.
Students should be given timely feedback upon completion of homework assignments. Homework must
never be given for punishment.
