Overview for Homebound/Elevate Extensions (Explanation)
This comprehensive guide is to support students who require extended course time due to homebound status or those who need extended time in Elevate. This guide will ensure that homebound and Elevate students have equitable access to educational resources and opportunities, enabling them to continue their education effectively.
When a student is unable to complete the course work within the normal timeframe, a Canvas sub-account administrator will recreate the course for them, allowing them access to the course materials and information beyond the typical course end date. A sub-account administrator at the school site will:
- copy the teacher’s current course
- add the homebound teacher and the student to the course
- support the homebound teacher in their efforts to provide the materials necessary for the completion of the course

Plan of Action:
- Identify the Homebound/Elevate Student: First, identify the student who requires additional time and support to complete their coursework.
- Course Replication: A Canvas sub-account administrator at the school site or an edtech liaison should make a copy of the current course where the student is enrolled. This involves copying all course materials, assignments, and resources from the original course. To copy a course: you will need sub-account admin privileges at the school site where the original course is housed.
- Add Homebound/Elevate Teacher and Student: Once the course has been replicated, the sub-account administrator should add both the homebound/Elevate student and the designated homebound/Elevate teacher as participants in the course. This allows the teacher to have direct access to the course materials and the ability to support the student's learning journey. The Canvas sub-account admin will be automatically enrolled in the course. Don’t forget to remove them. At this time you may want to add the teacher of record to the course as well.
- Customize the Course: The homebound/Elevate teacher should work with the sub-account administrator and/or the teacher of record to customize the course as needed to meet the specific needs of the student. This may include adjusting assignment due dates, providing additional resources, or making accommodations as required.
- Access and Support: The homebound/Elevate teacher takes an active role in supporting the student's progress within the course. This can involve regular communication with the student, providing additional explanations or assistance as needed, and monitoring the student's engagement and progress.
- Completion of Course: Once the student has successfully completed the course requirements, the course can be marked as complete, and appropriate credits or grades can be awarded based on school policies and guidelines.
This structured approach ensures that homebound/Elevate students have the opportunity to succeed academically while receiving the support and accommodations they require. It also promotes collaboration between school staff, teachers, and administrators to create an inclusive learning environment.
Directions for Sub-Account Administrators
- Must be a Sub-Account Admin at the school where the student is enrolled or be an EdTech Liaison
- Copy a current course
- Set the end dates for the course
- Add Students and Homebound teachers to the course
- Remove Sub-Account Admin as a teacher in the course
How to copy a course in Canvas:
- Explain to the teacher of record that their entire course will be duplicated for the homebound/Elevate student.
Suggested Communication for the Teacher of Record:
I wanted to inform you about a necessary course-related procedure that we will be implementing to provide additional support to one of our students, [Student's Name].
Due to [briefly explain the circumstances, e.g., a medical condition], [Student's Name] is unable to complete their coursework within the current term. In order to ensure that they have the opportunity to successfully complete their education, we will replicate your Canvas course to create a dedicated course environment for [Student's Name]
I want to emphasize that your original course will remain completely intact, and you will continue to have full access to the original course materials.
We understand that this adjustment may raise questions or concerns. Please feel free to reach out to me or [Homebound/Elevate Teacher's Name] if you have any questions or if you would like more information about the process.
Sincerely,
