How to create an assignment in Canvas. This is a beginning level course for those who just been just started using Canvas and don't know how to create an assignment.

I'm in the Canvas help for KCS at-home course and that's where you would find links to other videos and more information on how to help you with Canvas. I'm going to look over here and notice that over here on the left hand side I have settings listed in this course that's because I'm a teacher in this course. When you come to this course you will not have settings you're only going to have settings in the courses where you are listed as a teacher. So we want to make sure that we choose a course to practice our assignments on that where you are listed as a teacher. I'm going to click on assignments and you can see that I have several assignments here that are already up and ready and ready to get started on. To start a new assignment we click the + assignment button and we're going to start out with our assignment name. If you used a name before in the past it's going to show up here and you can just pick it or you can type in any name that you choose. So assignment 5 and I'm going to put my instructions here.

One of the things that's nice to remember that's really cool is that you can also upload and record media. Which means you could record yourself giving the instructions and your students can also upload and record media to return the assignment that way. So if you want them to record themselves you can do that.

Alright so we're going to put the instructions here and then we're going to choose how many points we want this to have. Most of your assignments are going to be non graded and this is the only time you would really need to have any points would be when you're in high school and it's going to actually change the grade. However, if you don't have click anything it's gonna just be zero points and so zero points is kind of a little wonky so I'm just gonna put in 25 points and it's not really going to count towards a grade or anything like that but I'm just gonna give them some points for trying it. I'm gonna skip over the part that says assignments assignment group because that's not necessary. Canvas is very forgiving in that some of the things that you do are necessary and you'll know what those are like giving it a title and putting your instructions in and tell them how many points, but if I get something that I don't know what it means I can just skip and simply skip over it. And and unless Canvas needs it it will be fine. So I'm gonna display the greatest points I could choose complete or incomplete if that's all I wanted to do is see if they did it or didn't do it. The other ones are a little more complicated so I would just stick with either points or complete or incomplete and I'm not going to count this towards the final grade because this is not our gradebook.

And I'm gonna get to decide whether I want there to be no submission an online submission and on paper submission or an external tool. Now we're not going to collect anything on paper and we know we want them to turn something in so we're going to click on online and we're going to choose a file upload. A file upload would allow your students to turn in any kind of a Google Doc or word document and the word processing document that they're using and it will take a screenshot capture of that document in time and put it into your speed grader so you'll be able to grade it. We're going to skip over group assignments we're going to skip over require peer reviews and we can assign it to everyone. Now we can also go through and choose an assignment to just one specific person this one would just be assigned to Cat then I'm going to take that off and I'm going to go back and assign it to everyone.

I can set some due dates for when I want it to be due if I want it to be due a specific date I put it in there. If I only want them to be able to have access to it say for example I don't want them to be able to see this until next week I could set that as a future time and set done and that way they won't be able to see it until next week. Once I've completed this forum I simply click Save and publish and you'll see that assignment five is there. When I click on assignments here's my assignment five down here at the bottom and it's not available until April to 22nd.

Thank you for your time and attention and we will be doing more of these videos later.
