Google Search Tips

  • “ ” : Use quotation marks for an exact match – Recipe for “Boston cream pie”
  • -  : Use a minus sign in front of words to exclude (Boolean NOT) – Pizza near me -Domino's
  • ~  : Use a tilde in front of words for which you will accept a synonym – Types of ~lawyers (attorneys, barristers, etc.)
  • *  : Add in place of an unknown or variable word –  Money can't buy happiness but it can buy *
  • OR  : Use OR for results of both query terms (Boolean OR) – Cloud storage OR Google Drive OR Microsoft OneDrive
  • Site:   : Add Site: to the end of a query to search within a single site. Must provide the site URL – Cheetah photos site:nationalgeographic.com
  • AROUND(n)  : Add AROUND(n) between  terms to find results where those terms are located within (n) words of each other – “Social media” AROUND(4) “school-age children” will give results where those terms are close and likely related to eachother.

 

  • Define: term - definition
  • type math problems into the omnibar
  • convert units by typing __ to __ (inch to mile) (F to C)
  • Use All Filters and Tools for date and type filters
