You will learn how to use Google Docs Cloud Assignments directly within Canvas. If you do not yet have your Knox County Schools Google account registered in your Canvas account, please view the video called "Integrating with Canvas" in order to establish that connection. Once you've established that connection, you can return to this video to learn about Google Docs Cloud Assignments.

The Google and Canvas integration makes it possible to create assignments directly from Google files. This is an example of what a student would see when an assignment has been crafted in this way. Before you create a Google Docs Cloud Assignment, be sure you have created the Google file that you wish to use as the assignment template. That could be a Doc or some Slides.

Now you're ready to create an assignment in your Canvas course. This is a sample. I'm going to name this one "Google Docs Cloud Assignment." I could add some content into the text box, but for now, I'm going to go to the assignment settings.

For the submission type, you must select "External Tool," then click the "Find" button. You'll see a variety of options pop up. You'll want to click "Google Docs Cloud Assignment." Google Assignments LTI will work; however, it's not quite the same as Google Docs Cloud Assignments, and the Google Docs Cloud Assignments is what will be demonstrated in this video. So, if you wish to use the LTI version, you will have to follow a different set of instructions.

Once the tool loads, locate the Google file you want to use for your assignment. This would be the template you created. You can search or browse. Once you've located your file, you'll click "Submit," and then select "Now." You can see that a link has been added into your submission type, which indicates that your template has been attached to this assignment.

You'll fill in the rest of your settings for your assignment and then click "Save." This is what the assignment will look like on the teacher's side. On the student side, when students open the assignment, they're prompted to load the assignment in a new window, and then the template will appear for them. They should be able to type directly onto the template.

Once they have finished their work, they go up and click "Submit." If they decide to add to their submission, they can continue working and hit "Submit" again. On the teacher's SpeedGrader, the teacher will have the opportunity to view exactly what the students entered. Then, up in the submission view field, they can select which submission—whether that first one or the second one—they'd like to view.

There are written directions to this process available through the Bitly link below. You can pause the video here and copy down the link so that you can access these instructions in the future.

Use Google Docs Cloud Assignments to make the creation of your Canvas assignments efficient and organized!
